Today, we in the U.S. House of Representatives voted on H.R. 436, the Protect Medical Innovation Act. This bill will repeal a tax provision of the Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare") that puts a 2.3% tax on the sale of medical devices by manufacturers or importers. This repeal is part of the House Republican Plan for America's Job Creators to bring more certainty and fewer restrictions to American businesses.
H.R. 436 marks the 30th time that Republicans in the House have moved to dismantle or cut funding for part of the health care law. We all remember the 2,700-page debacle of a law of which then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "The American people will just have to wait until we pass it to see what is in it." Well, they passed it, and we've discovered provisions galore that kill jobs through tax hikes and vastly expand the reach of the federal government.
No doubt, our healthcare system has problems, and it needs to be reformed, but Obamacare only makes things worse. It burdens small businesses and creates a stifling uncertainty. The Medical Device Tax in particular threatens technology manufacturers. It would encourage layoffs, tempt more businesses to move overseas, and hurt the health care industry even more.
This is only one small step, however, in the fight against Obamacare. If you're tired of government-mandated health care and want to see it repealed, take 90 seconds to watch this video and sign a petition. The Supreme Court will make its decision about the constitutionality of Obamacare later this month. We need to let our leaders know what the American people believe!
